Walk with Amal: Educational Pack and Manual

With the educational package about Walk with Amal and the accompanying manual for teachers you can get started around the arrival of Amal.
In October Kleine Amal - a giant doll that personifies a Syrian refugee girl - appears in Belgium. Belgium is on its 8000 kilometer journey from Syria to England. Little Amal represents the 32 million children who have also been forced to leave their homes. An impressive educational package has been put together for you and your class about the journey of Kleine Amal.

  • The educational package deals with questions about migration, climate change and identity in a playful way. In addition, it also strengthens empathy, self-confidence and a sense of community within your class.
  • In the manual for teachers you can find several ready-made lesson preparations.

Some of the project's employees explain their favorite assignments:

The choice of Brechtje, artistic/educational employee at hetpaleis
'I think it's important that children learn to consider their words. Words can also be stamps that children and adults carry with them for a long time. So the activity around the importance of the right words is my favourite.'

You can find the assignment on page 23 in the educational pack. Lesson preparation can be found on page 31 (lesson 4) in the teacher's manual.

The choice of Hussein, director Walk with Amal in Antwerp
'For me, the theme of migration is the most important of this whole package. Because you see how animals also migrate and how things are often much more complicated with people. I am always very curious about the story behind the person. Everyone has a story. If I could choose which activity I would do with my class, it would definitely be the activity: Illustrate your own name.'

You can find the assignment on page 33 in the educational pack. Lesson preparation can be found on page 40 (lesson 5) in the teacher's manual.

Hanna's choice, translator of the package
'Climate and migration are not yet easily linked. I think it would be interesting to introduce this theme to children in a playful way. The assignment: create an art installation with waste that is perfect for visually depicting the rise in sea level.'

You can find the assignment on page 53 in the educational pack. Lesson preparation can also be found on page 53 (lesson 7) in the teacher's manual.
